Salman Rushdie

I was NOT invited to listen to Salman speak in the "master class". That did not stop me from camping right outside the room and listening under the door. He is a very warm speaker and I found him to be exceptionaly personable. Salman laughed along with the audience at his own friendly jokes and spoke very clearly about his deeper points when answering questions.

my roommate made the interesting comment that i was an exile listening to an exile.

note the class members in the front of the photo. i haven't managed to learn all of the light settings. in the distance you can see rushdie and president gamble standing together.

Comments:
My transcribed notes, heard under the door:
outside the door, i cannot hear clearly.
everything else is louder.
the people walking by are talking about their butts

his old voice is too quiet to hear
he mentioned the montana indian tribes
"ocean of writers"
am i part of the sea?

he mentions (many) people, jefferson, places (one of them is) headwaters, the movie "a river runs through it"
----it's not rusdie speaking, it's one of the religious studies professors, i had him for intro to religious studies 105----

land of so many wonderful writers
listening through a crack in the door
----i am reminded of a scene in the movie "almost famous" when william, the main character, is trying to get into the backstage of the rock concert to interview black sabbath. the door gaurd won't let him in and, when he finaly gets in, the music cues "take a straighter stronger course to the center of your life" as he sees the magical world he has entered into for the first time----

i'm thinking i want that music to cue. i want to sit inside this room. i've been outside of "the room" all my life and i'm sick of it. i am eternaly tired of this selective bullshit which barely takes into account passion or abbility. (yes, that's what i have in my notes)

i hear his voice
1 billion people are in india and 850 million are out of the cities. some of these places are so remote they are unmapped.

Q: do you feel obligated to write?
writing is a tool, think, conciousness
i am losing his words, they are so valuable to me

"sometimes you have a difficult thing of saying, is there a way of saying it simply?"
"language is just flavor."

Q: apai asks about relgion, hystory, and climbing mount everest as influences in writing
everything is an influence, sex, words? death
novel is capacious, novel actualy not fantasy
how people fall in love, what do they do when they are fired
"writing is a way of responding to the world"

----now i'm laying on my back. no more sitting up, the crack under the door is wider and i can hear more. i think breifly about how dirty the floor probably is and how my hair won't be clean for much longer. this reminds of the times i spent growing up skateboarding in new york city, salmans new home. i've spent far longer in much nastier stuff on account of my skateboarding habbit. montana, comparably, is much much cleaner----

much laughter
physical spaces as arts in writing
people in indiana would spend winter on making beautiful things

remain true to the spirit of the place

magical realism question and unclear response
"i stumbled on writing accidentaly"
"writing demonstrates possibilities"
shows you multiple possibilities

Q: what is possible ----reflect on this----
lots of laughing, telling beginning of writing a story

tells story about sharing book with bono. bono writes song about passage. makes salman fly to dublin to listen. bono's car has sound system not like salmans car.
industry specialist lawyers, why the industry labels have so much money and artists don't
it started a spark

what is our responsibility to the ocean?
18th, 19th century writers assume level of knowledge in readers, not today
cadamus and harmony, heavily errotic metaphor of helen of troy stroking underside of the wooden horse. ___ has to strangle one of his own men inside the horse. so heavily errotic.

Q: what does it mean to be a patriot?

loud chairs

books subversive?
???

"writing a novel changes you"

"write as if no one has ever writen about it before"

universal human rights

brian Q: what stories is the world desperate to hear now?
takes less than 50 words to tell a story. everything else is fluff
(desperate for) my next novel?
laughing

----i take a picture of the room. through the small slit in the window we can see apai.----

gamble gets in
-clap- thanks

When Rushdie spoke, the room listened.

i'm still recovering from hearing him. my gaurded comments in class did not communicate the awesome experience of hearing him speak. he is the most captivating speaker i have ever heard.

weather the world is ready for me, or not, i will write and touch the nerves he has touched. i have no other choice.
